1. Picacho Peak State Park
Picacho Peak State Park, nestled between Casa Grande and Tucson just off exit 219 on Interstate 10, perfectly captures the awe-inspiring geology that awaits visitors. The park named, “Picacho,” meaning peak in Spanish, offers a plethora of well-marked hiking trails, inviting adventurers of all skill levels to explore its captivating terrain. It holds historical significance such as a backdrop for a pivotal Civil War battle when Arizona was still a territory.
2. Pinal County Historical Museum
For almost six decades, this museum has dedicated itself to preserving the rich history of the area and showcasing fascinating artifacts. The Pinal County Historical Museum’s exhibits display a wide range of artifacts, including books, weapons and even some intriguing prison and execution implements that were once used during the pioneer days. It also delves into the history and lives of the Native Americans who once called this land their home, providing a deeper understanding of their culture and the impact they had on the region. 3. Historic Florence Main Street
Florence, Arizona is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. With its rich history and charming small-town atmosphere, Florence offers a unique experience for visitors and residents alike. Whether grabbing food and fudge to-go at Florence Fudge Shop & Café, or picking out candy at Sweet P’s, there are a lot of local businesses to explore. 4. Arizona City Fire District’s Summer Water and Safety Days
Arizona City Fire District’s Summer Water and Safety Days is a respite for local kids and families during the heart of Arizona’s summer. Some 20 events happen each summer starting in late May followed by almost two whole months of water-related activities like slides, bounce houses, giveaways, and painting. Jeff Heaton, Arizona City fire chief, always likes to take the opportunity during the event to teach kids about fire safety, gangs and drug awareness before letting the kids enjoy the fun around them. Besides Summer Water and Safety Days, the Arizona City Fire District plays a big part in other festivities throughout the year, such as Trunk or Treat and Santa’s Fly In.
5. Saint Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery
In 1995, six Orthodox monks left Mount Athos in Greece to establish Saint Anthony, an Orthodox Monastery in Florence, Arizona. As the monastery expanded a vegetable garden, a small vineyard, citrus orchards, and an olive grove were soon planted. An elaborate system of gardens, pathways, gazebos, and Spanish fountains make the monastery and its extensive grounds a true oasis in the desert for visitors to enjoy. Its unique, intricate architecture is highlighted by the Sonoran desert as its backdrop. The monastery accepts day visitors who wish to see the grounds from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. seven days a week. Large groups need to call ahead, and proper dress code is enforced.
6. Caywood Farms in Casa Grande
Arizona is a significant cotton producer. Experience firsthand the fascinating world of cotton farming at Caywood Farms. Caywood Farms is a remarkable family-owned business that has been tending to the challenging Arizona land for an impressive four generations. From October to March, Caywood Farms offers insightful tours that provide a personal look at their cotton and alfalfa operations with equipment demonstrations, hands-on activities, and live banjo picking.
7. Goldfield Ghost Town
Have you ever wanted to see what it’s like living in the wild west? At Goldfield Ghost Town in Apache Junction, you can tour Mammoth Gold Mine, walk around Goldfield Museum, dine at the local saloon, pan for gold and experience Arizona’s only narrow-gauge train. If you’re lucky, you might even catch sight of a wild west gun fight performed by Goldfield’s own gunfighters! Train and mine tours are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.
8. Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch
The Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch is a family-owned Arizona gem that has been a beloved part of the community for generations. The ranch is home to African ostriches as well as a delightful array of other furry critters calling this place home. Feedings and interactions with the animals are encouraged, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures. Whether feeding an ostrich, petting a playful goat, or simply observing the diverse wildlife, the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch promises an immersive and memorable experience for all.
9. Windmill Winery in Florence
The Windmill Winery Tasting Room is in Florence, Arizona, and provides an immersive sample experience. Visitors can try wines, eat at food trucks, and enjoy live music, entertainment and special group events. The winery is a very popular spot for weddings and wedding receptions as well. The winery offers the Windmill Barn and Windmill Lake House, both popular venues for wedding events.
10. Biosphere 2
This three-acre laboratory and research center in Oracle, Arizona immerses visitors in a variety of environments—from the desert to the ocean to the rainforest and even to the Savanna—there’s so much to explore. Learn about different ecosystems and plant species native to each area while enjoying breathtaking views inside the Biosphere. Biosphere 2 is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day of the week. Visitors can enjoy a 1.5 hour guided audio tour via the app, which can be downloaded prior to arrival.
